Richmonds Bakery is the place for cake in Newport. It's an independent island bakery and café on St James' Street that started with its owner, Immy, selling cupcakes as a teenager. It's a regular stop on my wife's and my weekly trip into Newport. The sign in the café says they've been baking since 2012.

What sets Richmonds apart from most other cafés in Newport is the baking. There's a wide range of cakes, cupcakes, traybakes, pastries and sandwiches, and you can also order celebration cakes through their website.

The café is split over two floors and is always busy on a Saturday. It hosts local groups too; we've seen the ukulele club there.
It's very dog friendly: there were treats and water for dogs that you could help yourself to.

Always pick up a cake to go with your coffee. One of my favourites is the millionaire's shortbread, which is so thick and indulgent it's hard to finish in one sitting.
That's why we named Richmonds the "Best Café for Cake in Newport".

Richmonds is at 95-96 St James' Street, in the old Starbucks building. It's open 8:30am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. It's in the town centre, a short walk from Newport bus station.
