The Castle Inn is the oldest pub in Newport and it's steeped in rumour and mystery.
We know that the pub used to house a brothel on the first floor, back when this side of Newport was the rough part of town.
What's unclear is if the rumours of a tunnel from Carisbrooke Castle to the pub are true.
The HistorySection titled The%20History
The main historic claim to fame for the Castle Inn is the rumour that it once had a secret tunnel between the pub and Carisbrooke Castle.
According to the story, the tunnel was used by Charles I to make visits to the tavern during his imprisonment at the castle.
The FoodSection titled The%20Food
The Castle Inn is a great place to eat. The food is good and the portions are generous. Of particular note is the pies. They're almost a match for the pies at the Crown Inn.
The BeerSection titled The%20Beer
Beer is not where the Castle Inn excels. The beer they have is good, often there is a guest ale on tap and the usual mainstream options you'd expect to find in a pub.
If you're looking for more variety of a better selection of local beers, then the better options in Newport are the Bargemans Rest or Newport Ale House.
The AtmosphereSection titled The%20Atmosphere
The atmosphere at the Castle is great. Low ceilings, dark wood, stone floors and a real fire in the winter. It's a great place to spend an evening.
