What the beach at Lane End is like

Lane End is Bembridge's seaside, at the end of Lane End Road on the eastern tip of the Island. The beach faces east towards Selsey Bill and is dominated by the RNLI lifeboat station, which stands at the end of a long pier running out to sea. The top of the beach is sand and pebbles below a sea wall; lower down, the sand gives way to flat rock platforms, the Bembridge Ledges, which drop away towards low water.

At high tide there is very little beach, so this is a place to visit when the tide is out. Walking north towards Bembridge Harbour you pass big rocks and the worn stumps of old wooden groynes. To the south, the shore runs under the cliffs towards Foreland, where a clifftop pub looks over the ledges.

Rock pooling and the lifeboat station

The main reason families come is the rock pools. As the tide drops, the ledges uncover pools of seaweed and small sea life, and shrimping is popular; bring a net, a bucket and shoes with grip. The rocks are slippery, and the platforms end abruptly at the low-water edge.

The lifeboat station at the end of the pier houses a Tamar-class all-weather lifeboat and a D-class inshore lifeboat, Sue, which arrived in 2026. Watching a launch is memorable, but keep well out of the way. The RNLI gift shop is in the original 1867 boathouse near the beach. Swimming is possible over the sand around mid tide; the water was rated Good in 2025, one step below Excellent, and seaweed can be heavy in summer.

Parking, buses and toilets

The council's Lane End car park sits at the end of Lane End Road, a few minutes' walk from the beach. It is paid by PayByPhone (code 84026) or machine at standard long-stay rates, from £2.05 for an hour to £12.50 for six to ten hours. The postcode for sat-nav is PO35 5TD.

By bus, Southern Vectis route 8 between Ryde, Bembridge and Sandown stops on Lane End Road and at the Lane End shops, about ten minutes' walk away; the summer Island Coaster also calls at Lane End Road. Public toilets at Lane End are run by Bembridge Parish Council, which also took on an accessible toilet in the lifeboat shop building. Bembridge village, with shops, pubs and cafés, is a short walk inland.

Dogs and food

Bembridge is not covered by the council's summer dog exclusion order, and the council lists it as a year-round dog beach that suits dogs who like to potter rather than run, because of the rocks and pebbles. Keep dogs out of rock pools when children are using them, and clear up after them.

There is no café directly on the beach at present. The old Lifeboat View café on the seafront was demolished some years ago and a replacement was left half-built. In April 2025 the council approved a new café called The View on the Kingsmere site on Lane End Road, but we have not confirmed whether it has opened. The Crab and Lobster Inn, a short walk south on the cliff at Foreland, serves food.

Staying safe

There is little beach at high tide, and the rock platforms below the sand drop away near low water, so watch children on the ledges and keep an eye on the rising tide. The rocks and old groynes are covered in slippery weed; seaweed was heavy enough to be judged objectionable on 12% of Environment Agency visits from 2022 to 2025. A storm overflow near the end of the lifeboat pier can discharge after heavy rain, and the agency issued 7 pollution-risk warnings here in 2025. Keep clear of the lifeboat pier when the crew is launching. There are no lifeguards; in an emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Local tips

  • Go around low tide: the ledges and rock pools only appear as the sea drops, and at high water there is little beach.
  • Wear shoes with grip on the weedy ledges and old groynes.
  • Visit the RNLI shop in the original 1867 boathouse by the beach.
  • Dogs are welcome all year, which makes Lane End a useful summer alternative to the restricted resort beaches.
