What Totland Bay is like

Totland Bay is a small, quiet beach on the west coast, looking out over the western end of the Solent towards Hurst Castle and the Dorset coast. The sand is split by groynes and turns to pebbles against the sea wall, with a row of beach huts and the old Totland Pier at the northern end.

It is much less busy than the resort beaches, and the council lists it as a year-round dog beach. The Environment Agency rated the bathing water Excellent in 2025.

The big limitation is the tide. At high water the beach disappears completely and the sea comes up to the wall. Check the tide table and go around low water if you want to sit on the sand.

Swimming, sunsets and the sea wall

Visit Isle of Wight describes the water as clear and good for swimming. There are no lifeguards, so stay within your depth and keep away from the groynes.

Because the bay faces west, it is one of the best places on the island to watch the sun go down over the sea. The Waterfront pub on the sea wall has large windows on that side. Anglers fish from the sea wall at dusk further along.

A promenade runs north along the sea wall to Colwell Bay, about 15 to 20 minutes on foot. Parts of it have been closed after landslips; in 2024 it partly reopened once fallen rock was cleared. Look for notices before setting off.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed on Totland Bay all year. The Isle of Wight Council confirmed in April 2026 that there is no seasonal exclusion zone here, which makes it one of the few beaches on this coast where you can walk a dog on the sand in August. Some older holiday listings say dogs are restricted in summer; the council's current list is the one to trust, but check signs on arrival.

As everywhere on the island, dogs must be on a lead on roads and pavements under the council's dog control order. Colwell Bay next door is split at the slipway, with dogs allowed all year only on the eastern side.

Parking, toilets and buses

The seafront at Totland is reached down Madeira Road, which is narrow. There is a small council car park at the bottom, the Esplanade car park (PayByPhone 84109). In 2026 it cost £2.05 for up to an hour, £3.60 for two hours and £12.50 for 6 to 10 hours. In summer it is easier to park in the village at the council's Broadway car park, where the first hour is free (pay by phone only, code 59201), and walk down.

The public toilets on the seafront are run by Totland Parish Council. They do not yet have an accessible toilet.

Southern Vectis routes 7 and 12, and the seasonal Needles Breezer, stop at Totland War Memorial, at the top of Madeira Road.

By bus: Southern Vectis routes 7, 12, Needles Breezer to Totland War Memorial, then about 10 minutes on foot. Walk down Madeira Road to the seafront. Routes 7 and 12 run all year; the open-top Needles Breezer runs in season (23 March to 1 November in 2026).

Staying safe

No lifeguards. Groynes run down the beach; do not climb on them or swim close to them, as they can hide underwater hazards. The tide comes right up to the sea wall, so do not leave belongings on the sand at high water. The cliffs between Totland and Colwell have slipped onto the sea wall path in the past; keep out of any fenced-off section.

Local tips

  • Go around low tide; at high water there is no beach at all.
  • Come for sunset: the bay faces west across the Solent.
  • In summer, park at the Broadway car park in the village (first hour free) rather than squeezing down Madeira Road.
  • The sea wall walk to Colwell is about 15 to 20 minutes, but check for landslip closures first.
