Gurnard is one of the beaches covered by the council's dog exclusion order from 1 May to 30 September (confirmed for 2026). The council's published zone description puts the banned stretch from the eastern edge of the public slipway where Shore Road meets the promenade, east to the groyne by the Princes Esplanade fountain; the shore either side is outside the zone. That zone wording comes from a 2015 council leaflet, as the current PSPO maps on the council website could not be opened during research, so follow the signs on the sea wall. Dogs are allowed on the whole beach from October to April.

What the beach is like

Gurnard is the village beach at the western end of the Cowes seafront. It is a fairly narrow strip of shingle with some sand, backed by a sea wall lined with the council's green beach huts and a big sloping lawn, Gurnard Green, with a children's play area on it. Gurnard Sailing Club sits at the eastern end of the green and the Gurnard Luck stream meets the sea just west of the beach.

It faces north-west across the Solent to the New Forest shore, and it is well known locally for its sunsets over the water. Container ships, ferries and yachts heading for Southampton and Cowes pass close in, so there is always something to watch.

Swimming and water quality

Gurnard is a designated bathing water and was rated Excellent by the Environment Agency for 2025, based on samples taken between mid-May and the end of September. The shingle slopes gently at first and then drops into deep water, and the tidal streams off this stretch can be strong, so it suits confident swimmers more than young children.

The one thing to plan around is rain. Two storm overflows and the Gurnard Luck stream can affect the water after a heavy downpour, and the Environment Agency issued 15 pollution risk warnings here during 2025. Warnings are posted online and usually clear within a day or so. There are no lifeguards.

Dogs, parking and getting here

From 1 May to 30 September dogs are banned from the central part of the beach in front of the green and huts; the shore outside that zone stays open, and the whole beach is open to dogs from October to April. Check the signs, as the council's online maps were not available when we checked.

Parking along Princes Esplanade and on the edge of the green was free when we checked in October 2026. The council has tried to bring in charges here several times, most recently in 2026, and each time the plans were dropped. By bus, the 32 community bus stops at the Woodvale on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The flat seafront walk from Cowes, past Egypt Point, takes about half an hour.

Food, toilets and the sailing club

The public toilets are just above the beach beside the sailing club and include an accessible cubicle. For food, the Watersedge trailer at the eastern end of the seafront does takeaway drinks and snacks, and The Woodvale pub on the esplanade has tables looking straight out over the water, which is where most people end up at sunset.

Gurnard Sailing Club, at the eastern end of the green, offers visiting memberships over the summer. Sailing and other watersports are popular between the beach and Gurnard Marsh, but we have not found a hire operator on the beach itself, so bring your own kit.

By bus: Southern Vectis route 32 to Gurnard Woodvale Inn, then about 3 minutes on foot. Route 32 is a community bus circular from Cowes (Carvel Lane) via Gurnard and Northwood, running about five times a day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays only (timetable from 24 May 2026). On other days, take route 1 to Cowes and walk about 2.5 km west along the seafront.

Staying safe

The shingle shelves into deep water and the Solent currents here can be strong, so stay within your depth and keep children close. Wash from big ships can push surprisingly large waves up the beach a few minutes after they pass. Weed on the groynes is slippery. The Environment Agency issues pollution risk warnings for Gurnard after heavy rain (15 in 2025); check the forecast before swimming and avoid the water for a day or two after a downpour, particularly near the Gurnard Luck stream and the storm outfalls.

Local tips

  • On fine summer evenings the free seafront parking is popular with people coming for the sunset, so arrive in good time.
  • Look up the tide and the shipping before swimming with children: the wash from a large ship arrives a few minutes after it has passed and can knock small children over.
  • Check the Environment Agency's daily pollution risk forecast after rain; Gurnard is one of the north-coast beaches where warnings are issued.
  • The 32 bus does not run on Mondays, Fridays or Sundays, so on those days walk the seafront from Cowes instead.
  • Walk east along Princes Esplanade to Egypt Point and Cowes for a flat seafront stroll of about 2.5 km with views of the shipping lane.

Frequently asked questions

Are dogs allowed on Gurnard beach?

Dogs are banned from the central part of Gurnard beach from 1 May to 30 September, roughly between the Shore Road slipway and the groyne by the Princes Esplanade fountain. Outside that zone, and on the whole beach from October to April, dogs are allowed.

Is parking free at Gurnard?

Yes, at the time of research the on-street parking along Princes Esplanade and Gurnard Green was free. Council plans to add charges were rejected in October 2026.

Is it safe to swim at Gurnard?

The water was rated Excellent for 2025, but the beach shelves into deep water with strong currents and there are no lifeguards. Avoid swimming for a day or two after heavy rain, when the Environment Agency may issue a pollution warning.

Are there toilets at Gurnard beach?

Yes, there is a public toilet block above the beach next to Gurnard Sailing Club, with an accessible toilet.

Can you get to Gurnard by bus?

The 32 community bus stops at the Woodvale Inn on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On other days, take the 1 to Cowes and walk about 2.5 km along the seafront.

Is Gurnard good for sunsets?

Yes. The beach faces north-west across the Solent, so in summer the sun sets over the water, and the green and The Woodvale are popular places to watch it.
