What the beach is like
Sandown has one of the island's longest sandy beaches, running along the Esplanade from Lake in the south-west to Yaverland in the north-east. The busiest part is either side of Sandown Pier, where the beach, arcades and cafés all sit together.
The sand is soft and fairly flat, and wooden groynes divide the beach into bays. The Environment Agency rated the water Good in 2025, one step below the Excellent rating at neighbouring Yaverland and Shanklin. It is the most traditional seaside resort beach on the island, so expect crowds on hot August days.
Things to do
Sandown Pier is open every day of the year, with free entry, amusements, an indoor play area and a café. Along the Esplanade you'll find more amusements, kiosks and cafés, and the promenade is lit up on summer evenings.
For a change from the beach, the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary and Dinosaur Isle museum are along the seafront to the north-east, towards Yaverland. If you want a quieter spot, walk away from the pier in either direction: the crowds thin out quickly, and outside the central zone dogs are allowed even in summer.
Getting there and parking
There is pay-and-display parking along the Esplanade itself (PayByPhone 84002) and in council car parks in the town, including Fort Street and St Johns Road. A typical long-stay car park costs £2.05 for an hour, £6.20 for up to four hours and £12.50 for up to ten in 2026. The council's figures for Esplanade on-street parking look different from other towns, so check the machine before you pay.
Routes 8 and 24 stop on the seafront at Avenue Slipway; routes 2 and 3 stop on the High Street. In summer the seasonal Island Coaster and Downs Breezer services also call at Avenue Slipway, linking Sandown with Ryde, Shanklin, Ventnor and Bembridge.
Practical and safety
The town council's toilets at Eastern Gardens, by Avenue Road slipway, have an accessible toilet, baby change and summer beach showers, plus a Changing Places room you book through the council. The Pier Street toilets are closed until further notice.
Lifeguards from Ryde Beach Lifeguards cover the beach in May, July and August on behalf of the town council. Hours for 2026 were not published, so look for the flags. Stay off the groynes and away from them when swimming. From 1 May to 30 September dogs are banned from the central stretch either side of the pier.
Dogs at Sandown Beach
Dogs are banned from 1 May to 30 September on the central seafront either side of the pier, along the Esplanade (council map E49). Outside the marked zone dogs are allowed all year. Dogs are not allowed on the pier except guide dogs.

Staying safe
Lifeguards cover part of the beach in summer; swim between their flags when they are on duty and never when red flags fly. Wooden groynes run down the beach: don't swim near them or climb on them, as they are slippery and hide underwater hazards. Yellow buoys mark the 200-metre limit for powered craft in summer. Outside lifeguard hours, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard in an emergency.
Local tips
- Head away from the pier for space on busy days: the beach is long and quieter at both ends.
- Bring a contactless card or the PayByPhone app; the seafront bays use location 84002.
- Dog owners in summer can use the beach outside the central zone, or go on to Yaverland east of its car park.
