What the beach is like
Ventnor's beach is a small, curved bay of sand and shingle tucked under the town, which climbs the hillside behind in terraces. It faces south over the English Channel, and the water is shallow close in.
The Esplanade runs the length of the beach, from the Spyglass Inn at the western end to Ventnor Haven, the small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The Environment Agency rated the water Excellent in 2025. Colourful beach huts line the sea wall, and you can hire huts and deckchairs in summer.
Things to do
Children love the free paddling pool on the Esplanade, at the foot of the Cascade gardens, which is laid out as a map of the Isle of Wight. The Spyglass Inn sits right on the beach with outdoor terraces and a menu built around fish landed at the haven next door.
At Ventnor Haven you can buy fresh fish and shellfish from the fishery. Walkers can follow the sea wall east along the Eastern Esplanade to Bonchurch, which reopened in May 2024 after storm damage, or head west along the coast path to Steephill Cove, about 900 metres away.
Getting there and parking
On-street bays along the Esplanade (PayByPhone 84004) cost £2.05 for an hour, £6.20 for up to four hours and £11.40 for up to eight in 2026. The Eastern Esplanade car park charges the same hourly rates, and the cheaper Shore Road car park costs £5.50 for up to ten hours. Use postcode PO38 1JX (the Spyglass Inn) to reach the seafront.
Buses stop in the town above the beach: route 3 by Boots, and routes 6, 31 and the seasonal Island Coaster opposite St Catherine's Church. Allow 5 to 10 minutes on foot down the steep streets, and longer coming back up.
Practical and safety
Ventnor Town Council runs the toilets on the Eastern Esplanade and at Shore Road. In summer 2026, from 13 July to 6 September, its beach safety team works from the First Aid Hut on the Esplanade, offering first aid and advice. This is not a lifeguard service, so keep children within reach in the water.
Local guides warn of rocks under the surface and a strong tidal flow, so swim close to shore. Dogs are banned from the whole beach from 1 May to 30 September; Bonchurch, a short walk east along the sea wall, allows dogs all year.
Dogs at Ventnor Beach
Dogs are banned from 1 May to 30 September on the whole main beach, from the western end below Bath Road to Ventnor Haven (council map E53). Allowed from October to April. Neighbouring Bonchurch, east along the sea wall, allows dogs all year.

By bus: Southern Vectis routes 3, 6, 31 to Ventnor, opposite St Catherine's Church, then about About 5 to 10 minutes, steeply downhill on foot. Routes 6 and 31 and the seasonal Island Coaster stop opposite St Catherine's Church; route 3 (Newport–Ventnor–Ryde) stops in the town centre by Boots. All stops are uphill from the seafront.
Staying safe
There are no lifeguards; the summer beach safety team gives first aid and advice but does not carry out rescues. Local guides warn of hidden rocks offshore and strong tidal flow, so swim close in and avoid watersports here. The cliffs east of the haven are unstable: part of the Eastern Esplanade collapsed in 2022 and reopened in May 2024 after new sea defences. In an emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
Local tips
- Take the dog to Bonchurch in summer: it's a short walk east along the sea wall and has no seasonal ban.
- Shore Road car park is the cheapest council option for a full day.
- Buy fresh shellfish at the Haven fishery for a picnic on the beach.
