What the cove is like

Steephill Cove is a tiny bay of sand and shingle just west of Ventnor, lined with fishermen's cottages, beach huts and working boats. There is no road down to it, which keeps it free of cars and gives it a slower pace than the town beach next door.

It is small, so it fills up on hot summer days, but out of season you may have it nearly to yourself. At low tide the rocks either side of the sand are good for rock pooling. The cove is not a designated bathing water, so the Environment Agency does not test or rate the sea here.

Food and things to do

Most people come for a swim, a look around the rock pools and something to eat. The Crab Shed serves fresh local seafood, including its well-known small crab pasties, and The Beach Shack sits just off the cove. Both are worth checking ahead out of season.

You can hire deckchairs in summer. The cove makes a natural break on the coast path between Ventnor and St Lawrence, and Ventnor Botanic Garden is just above it if you want to make a day of it.

Getting there and parking

There is no parking at the cove. The nearest car park is at Ventnor Botanic Garden (sat-nav PO38 1UL), which charges £5 for an all-day ticket and is free if you pay to enter the garden. It uses number-plate cameras, so register your car on the iPads on site.

From the car park, follow the footpath down to the cove; it is steep. Alternatively, walk west from Ventnor Esplanade along the coast path, about 900 metres. Bus route 31 stops by the Botanic Garden, and routes 3 and 6 serve Ventnor town.

Practical and safety

The council lists a small toilet at the cove run by a third party, and there are accessible toilets at the far end of the Botanic Garden car park. There are no lifeguards.

Dogs are allowed all year according to the council, which notes that the cramped layout suits dogs under close control. Some guides say the cove asks for dogs on leads during the day, so look for signs. The paths in and out are steep and not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

By bus: Southern Vectis route 31 to Steephill Botanic Garden, then about About 10 minutes, downhill on footpaths on foot. Route 31 (Ventnor town circular via St Lawrence) stops by the Botanic Garden. Routes 3 and 6 reach Ventnor town, from where you can walk along the Esplanade and coast path.

Staying safe

There are no lifeguards and the cove is not a designated bathing water, so it has no official water-quality rating. Rocks run out from both sides of the cove; swim near the middle and watch for fishing boats using the slipway. The access paths are steep and can be slippery after rain.

Local tips

  • Walk in along the coast path from Ventnor Esplanade and save the parking fee.
  • If you're visiting the Botanic Garden anyway, buy a garden ticket and the parking is free.
  • Arrive early in summer: the cove and its cafés are small and fill quickly.
